Introduce a Grade 1-8 Girl to Engineering Day @ UT Austin Feb. 24

datePosted on 12:03, February 17th, 2012 by neshybam

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day)

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day) is an international event celebrated during Engineers Week each year.

Students and their parents or educators are invited to UT for an afternoon of engineering fun. UT’s national award winning Girl Day, presented by the Women in Engineering Program (WEP), gives 2,000 first through 8th grade students a chance to:

  • have fun doing grade-specific, hands-on engineering activities,
  • meet students, professors and engineers from industry, and
  • see what it’s like to be an engineer.

Thanks to Girl Day 2012 Lead Platinum Partner Halliburton, WEP is able to offer the program for free. Thanks also to WEP Platinum Partner Chevron; WEP Silver Partners Bechtel, Caterpillar, ExxonMobil, Fluor, and General Motors Company; and WEP Friends IBM and National Instruments for supporting Girl Day 2012.

Date and Time

Saturday, February 25, 2012
2 – 5 p.m.

The Girl Scouts of Central Texas will have Girl Day patches for sale prior to the event and available for pick up at the Girl Scout booth. Patches cost $3 each. All Girl Day participants will receive a Girl Day giveaway as well as an activity passport to record the day’s events.

A special thanks to all WEP Girl Day Partners including local community organizations and not-for-profits, engineering student organizations, companies, and area colleges and universities. For more information on how to join WEP in this effort, contact Tricia Berry at tsberry@mail.utexas.edu or 512-471-5650.

How it Works

Activities for first-third graders, fourth and fifth graders and sixth-eighth graders are housed in UT’s engineering complex. Students are encouraged to build and experiment at their own pace with all of the age-appropriate activities in their specific building. There are no volunteers or guides to take students around to the activities, so parents, counselors, or teachers are expected to remain with students during the event. Information areas are available parents and counselors may collect additional information and resources about engineering for their students.

Parking Information

NO FREE PARKING WILL BE OFFERED IN 2012 FOR GIRL DAY PARTICIPANTS. There are several PAID parking garages that are open to the public near the event check-in. With close to 1,800 participants expected, we recommend you arrive early so you can find a parking space in one of the nearby garages. The garages closest to the event check-in are the Speedway Parking Garage, the 27th Street Garage, and the San Jacinto Garage. For parking rates and a list of ALL UT campus garages, please visit the Parking and Transportation Services web site.

If you are traveling by school bus you must let us know in your group registration so we can arrange for a bus parking permit. Buses will be able to drop-off and pick-up participants near the event check-in. Bus parking WILL NOT be within walking distance of the Girl Day event. Additional information about parking and check-in will be sent through the event registration confirmation email.
