Fourth graders have been studying ways in which weathering and erosion effect soil and change the Earth. Students were shown pictures of these effects and were given an opportunity to use Paint to create their own artwork. Here are some of the class favorites from Mrs. Evans’ room.

Kindergarten and second grade students at Science Hall created camouflage for turkeys before the Thanksgiving holiday. After reading the book The Plump and Perky Turkey by Theresa Bateman, the students created disguises for their turkeys. We connected with schools in Lubbock, Texas and Huntington, West Virginia to share our turkey disguises and see the interesting costumes our partner classes created. Our Shining Suns were very creative and did a great job presenting to the other classes. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Bookman to the rescue!

Bookman to the rescue!

The students in LeeAnn Voges’ class taught 4th graders at Kyle Elementary about using the Destiny catalog in the library via videoconferencing. The guide during the videoconference was Bookman and he saved the students from spending unnecessary time looking for books. The students reviewed the different search categories in Destiny (Keyword, Title, Subject and Author) and then took a 10 minute break to search for different books in their library. After sharing about the books they found the Kyle students took a short “quiz” to demonstrate how much they had learned. This was one of the first times in Hays CISD that a group of students delivered the content for a videoconference and it was great. Tracy Mulligan, campus technologist at Kyle Elementary, wrote:
“Ms. Voges’ class at Science Hall created a fantastic video conference! They did a skit to teach our kids how to use Destiny to find books in the library. Our 4th grade teacher said it is something her class is weak in and that in the short amount of time we spent engaged in the activity from LeeAnn’s class they learned a lot!”

4th graders from Ms. Mayer and Mrs. Spoon’s classes participated in an exciting videoconference that tested their knowledge of the regions of Texas. The students researched and presented clues about the Coastal Plains Region. The students choose to share their clues using a newscast format; complete with weather, sports, and breaking news. The students then watched presentations from Buda Elementary and a 4th grade class from Killeen, Texas. After some time to discuss the clues and a round of clarifying questions the classes revealed their guesses and mystery regions. All participants were able to correctly guess the regions presented by the classes due to the wonderful presentations. A big thank you goes to Christie Rickert, Distance Learning Specialist for Hays CISD, for creating and moderating the conference. Texas Rocks!

A 4th grade "teacher" with the Interactive Quilt

A 4th grade "teacher" with the Interactive Quilt

4th grade students at Science Hall created a Texas Museum for the rest of the school to enjoy. The 4th graders were museum docents, sharing information about Native Americans, plants & animals, early explorers, the Civil War, and the Alamo. All grade levels were able to travel from room to room and ask questions and watch presentations on the different areas. The students enjoyed all the authentic artifacts, dress, and even food provided at the exhibits. In Mrs. Evans’ room the students created an Interactive Quilt to use on the Smart Board. One side of the quilt square had a picture and the other had information about the person. It was great to see students using the Smart Board and learning about the Civil War.
