Tip of the Week: Citing Sources

Remember to give credit where credit’s due!!

Anything taken from the Internet needs to be properly cited.

Here is the format of a good Internet citation.

Author. “Title of Article.”  Title of Web Site. Organization.
Posting Date. Access Date. <URL address>.

Notice how the Author’s name is further to the left than the beginning of the next line?  That’s called a Hanging Indent – you can set that up on your ruler, or in the options under Format Paragraph so you don’t have to remember to do it with the space bar, if you are using a word processor.

Tip of the Week: Database Definitions

A DATABASE is an collection of information (‘data’) organized in a meaningful way.  The library card catalog, the contact list in a cell phone, and the media library on an iPod are all examples of databases.

When you search a database for a particular type of information, you are conducting a QUERY.  Anytime you enter a search term on Google, you are querying its database to retrieve all records that match the term in your search.

The RECORDS in a database can be sorted according to different criteria, into ASCENDING  (’A at the top’) or DESCENDING  (’Z at the top’) order.  When you order the tunes in your iPod by Artist, Album, or Genre,  you are sorting your data.

Tip of the Week: CTRL-F

To search for a term or phrase on a web page, use CTRL-F.
